It's a New Day at SCC

Stowe Country Club will keep you coming back to enjoy the course day after day. A classic mid-century course designed by William Mitchell, the course offers risk-reward shot-making and stunning views of the surrounding Green Mountains.

The 18-hole parkland layout features multiple tee boxes that provide a blend of challenge and enjoyment. There are not many flat lies and the greens can be down right slick if you get above the hole.

In recent years, we have implemented a number of projects to improve the course. A large number of overgrown white pines were removed to better improve turf health and open up vistas. Wall-to-wall drainage projects including slit drains on a number of greens, investment in equipment and upgraded agronomics had immediate effects and in the past five years we completed a redesign of the #2, 4, 10 & 15^th tee complexes that dramatically improved the holes. We continue to add forward tees to expand the enjoyment of shorter hitters. Last summer we re-designed the green complexes on #7 & #8.

After your round you can relax in our comfortable Clubhouse overlooking the course, where our staff will be on hand to serve you while you reminisce about your round with friends.

Alternatively, you can hone your game on the largest practice facility in the state and the best short game facility in the county.

HOLE 1

Tee shots must avoid OB left and a bunker right on this par 5. Trying to reach in two is foolhardy; go with a three-wood off the tee to the center of the fairway, then lay up to the valley below the green. The uphill approach is to a back-to-front sloping green fronted by bunkers on both sides.

This par 3 is relatively easy if you aim for the center of the green. The wind is usually with you, so make your club selection wisely. Shots that come up short may find one of the deep bunkers fronting the green. Going long and ending up behind the green is no picnic either.

This par 5 can be an easy birdie or a welcome par. Tee shots must avoid the OB left. If you lay up your second shot, play to the 150-yard marker for a clear view on the approach. The multi-tiered green has some tricky pin placements, so try to get it close.

From the tee, this banal par 3 seems to be unpretentious with its flat green and short length, but watch out, this hole can be deceptive. Find the center of the green to avoid trouble left, right and behind.

HOLE 5

It’s rare when the first par 4 isn’t until the fifth hole. Avoid the large bunker left by fading your tee shot toward the right side 150-yard marker. The approach must negotiate large bunkers, an overhanging birch tree and a hazard behind the green. This putting surface is very slippery, so be careful.

HOLE 6

Long hitters can reach in two, but we don’t recommend trying it. Tee shots that don’t reach the flats leave a difficult uphill fairway wood from a hanging lie. The smart play is to lay up just short of the creek for an easy pitch over the deep bunker that fronts the elevated green.

HOLE 7

This par 4 for men, par 5 for ladies is the #1 handicap hole. Finding a flat lie means keeping your tee ball in the fairway. The long, blind, uphill approach is very difficult. Bunkers on the left lead many players to bail out right. Stay below this pin.

This par 3 calls for a mid- to short-iron tee shot. The putting surface is by far the slickest on the course and the five bunkers that surround it don’t make things any easier. Get it close and birdies will abound. If you end up above the pin or find a bunker, you’re in trouble.

The tee you play from may affect your strategy here, but the lake is not a factor for most players. However, the steep hill in the landing zone can make imprudent golfers swing for the fences. Your approach to this large green must find the putting surface if you are to make par.

HOLE 10

This beautiful par 3, at one time voted among the 18 prettiest in New England, is considered our Signature Hole. The contrast of the Green Mountains in the distance and the mounds behind the green is lovely. Wind can make your club selection difficult. This green is heavily bunkered.

This par 5, like many others here, tempts you to try and reach in two. Tee shots must avoid the left side pines. Missing the green to the right with a fairway wood second shot can spell disaster; you will wish you had played it safe and laid up for a 100-yard approach.

Tee shots must avoid the large trees framing this fairway. Before playing the blind second shot, take a peak to insure that the green is unoccupied and to see the pin placement. Factor in the elevation and the wind when playing your approach to this bunkerless, two-tiered green with OB behind it.

HOLE 13

Go with a three wood or long iron off the tee on this dogleg left par 4. The sloping fairway funnels most shots into the proper landing zone. Avoid the OB left. The short-iron approach is to a flat green framed by mounds. The road behind the green is also out of bounds.

Two solidly-played 238 woods on this par 5 can help you make up ground before the home holes, but playing three consecutive five irons is not unheard of here either. Bunkers and water hazards flank the landing area, so be careful off the tee. Two more bunkers front the relatively flat and receptive green.

This par 3 offers you another chance to score. Play to the center of the putting surface, avoiding the two large bunkers fronting the green. Do not go over the green or you may find yourself in jail among the trees behind it.

Get your tee shot to the top of the hill (211 yards from the back tees) to avoid either a horrendous downhill lie or the trees on the right. The crowned green is difficult to hold, so getting up and down for par with a well played chip or bunker shot is common.

Even if you find the narrow fairway on this par 4, you could face an uneven lie for your second shot. Don’t put your tee shot in the left side rough or finding the putting surface on your approach will be very difficult.

With a tailwind, long hitters can drive this short par 4. The fence on the left marks out of bounds and the bunker on the right sees lots of action from stray tee shots. Finishing your round strongly before the curious on-lookers from the clubhouse deck is rewarding; good luck!
